Don't forget to checkout the Image optimization tool by SiteReportCard. Absolutely wonderful tool I am feeling great that I know this. Yeah you will loss some quality but when considering web designs it hardly matters (to a point though), You can give Yahoo Smushit a try after that.
I've compressed my website background with that from 400kB+ to something around 80kB and still feel happy about using it as my website background.
